When does free speech cross the line and start to oppress the freedom of others?
Clacka is disappointed to see the insane rise of blatant and open racism that has come to the fore in Britain and the United States, since the brexit vote and the rise of Donlald Trump.
Now neither the Leave campaign in Britain or Mr Trump are racists to the best of our knowledge, but they have both capitalised on people's base fears to make political gain. We suspect that both political campaigns know they cannot deliver what they promise (particularly Trumps more outrageous statements i.e. the wall across the Mexican Border), but they are happy to fuel and pander to fears if it wins votes.
The trouble is that by taking the stance of telling the electorate that they understand them and they know how no-one else listens to them, and that they are their only friend and will fight for them, it has encouraged extremist hate mongers that their abhorrent views are actually, after all acceptable, and it is only the cowardice of the political establishment that has been telling everyone it's wrong. Of course this then leads to outlandish conspiracy theories which leads to further reinforce their determination to speak out and 'be free'.
The question is when does free speech cross the line and start to oppress the freedom of others such as the vile abuse given to actor Leslie Jones this week supposedly on the basis of Ghostbusters 3 but hasn't been given to her co-stars https://mobile.twitter.com/Lesdoggg
It's not confined to America either. Following the referendum result we saw a rise of similar outbreaks in Britain: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-latest-news-updates-remain-twitter-muslim-racist-abuse-a7101491.html
Since when does winning a vote to leave the European Union turn Britain into Nazi Germany, or Trumps brand of nationalism allow people to rubbish other races in a country where the only people who can truly grumble about immigration were rounded up, and placed in reservations?
Both the Trump and Brexit campaigns are disappointing because they are examples of intelligent people knowingly acting irresponsibly to further their aims with no regard to the consequences.
This website does not plead any political allegiance and will happily slay all parties in equal measure, but to denigrate and abuse a human purely on the basis of the colour of their skin is totally unacceptable to all civilised people.
